As a full-time blogger, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to stay focused and productive day after day. It’s all too easy to get sidetracked with all the day-to-day tasks like blog writing, emails, and other distractions that can come up.

But as an entrepreneur, it’s essential that I prioritize my time in order to succeed. That’s why I’m a strong believer in time blocking (sometimes referred to as day blocking).

Day blocking is a practice of breaking down your day into specific chunks of time (sometimes also referred to as time chunking) where you focus on one task or goal at a time.

By taking this approach, you’re able to limit distractions and maximize productivity. Plus, it allows you to see exactly what needs to be done each day in order for you to reach your goals faster.

As entrepreneurs, we often have a never-ending to-do list, and it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start.

That’s why it’s important to prioritize high-impact tasks – the ones that will make the biggest difference in your business.

Depending on your business, these could be tasks like reaching out to potential clients, working on a new product, or maybe creating some social media content.

Think about what tasks will have the biggest impact on your business and prioritize them in your day blocking schedule.

For example, if you run a blog and know that content creation is crucial for your blog’s success, schedule a specific time slot each day for writing and editing blog posts.

This way, you’re ensuring that you’re dedicating time and energy to the tasks that will have the greatest impact on your blog’s growth.

Now, prioritizing high-impact tasks doesn’t mean neglecting smaller tasks altogether.

You can still schedule time for those tasks, but just make sure you’re focusing on the high-impact tasks first to make the most of your time and energy.

  2. Audience Engagement: Engaging with your audience is crucial to building a loyal following. This could include responding to comments, hosting webinars, or creating social media content and responding to your audience there.
  3. Search Engine Optimization (SEO): SEO is essential for bloggers looking to increase their visibility on search engines and drive traffic to their website. Tasks like researching keywords, optimizing your website pages, and creating meta descriptions fall under this category.
  4. Networking: Networking with other bloggers, influencers, and industry experts can help you build valuable connections and increase your exposure. This could involve attending conferences, joining online communities (I’m in several Facebook blogging groups that have proven especially joyful and helpful), or participating in guest posting.
  5. Monetization: For many bloggers, monetization is a key goal. For me, this has looked like creating digital products, promoting affiliate products, and (hopefully soon) working on sponsored content.

As entrepreneurs, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of working long hours and neglecting our personal lives.

That’s why it’s important to set boundaries around work time when using day blocking.

  • Set realistic work hours: Determine how many hours you want to work each day and stick to them. Oft-times challenging, yes, but it’s important to avoid burnout and it will help you increase productivity in the long run.

How to Create a Structured Schedule With Day Blocking

Creating a day-blocking schedule may seem daunting at first, but it doesn’t have to be!

Start by listing out all the tasks that need to get done each day then assign specific time slots to each task and block off your day accordingly.

I like to set reminders for myself throughout the day so that I don’t forget when tasks are due or slip into procrastination mode.

Also, make sure to leave room in your time-blocking schedule for unexpected events or tasks that might pop up during the day. Life happens!

This will help you stay flexible and not get thrown off your schedule too quickly if something unexpected comes up.

Consider the following suggestions when organizing your schedule:

  • Create a routine: Consistency is key when it comes to productivity. Create a routine that works for you and stick to it as much as possible. This can help you maintain focus and increase productivity throughout the day.

💌 A Special Note About Scheduling in Time for Self-Care

When day blocking, I make sure to schedule in time for self-care activities, such as my daily walk and meditation, or spending some extra time with my son or other loved ones.

Activities like these can help you recharge and feel refreshed when it’s time to return to work mode.

In my opinion, day blocking / time blocking is all about finding a balance between productivity and self-care.

I’m the self-care care queen over here so I recommend that self-care time should also be considered a high-impact task – especially since it can significantly impact your mental and physical health. And by prioritizing self-care time, we can also prevent burnout.

When I prioritize self-care time just as much as my other high-impact tasks, I’ve found that I maximize my productivity and still achieve my business goals – while also maintaining my health and well-being.
